The Irish Water Spaniel is the tallest of all the spaniels and one of the oldest and most distinctive Irish sporting breeds — a powerfully built, liver-colored water retriever with a dense, tight-curled coat covering its body, a smooth "rat tail" tapering to a fine point, and a characteristic topknot of loose curls on its head. Developed in Ireland in the early 19th century, largely attributed to breeder Justin McCarthy of Dublin, the Irish Water Spaniel was bred to retrieve waterfowl from the cold, rough waters of the Irish coast and inland lakes. Its dense, water-repellent curly coat and webbed feet make it an exceptional swimmer, and its clownish, inquisitive personality has earned it the nickname "the clown of the spaniel family." The breed was one of the ten foundation breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club when it was established in 1884.
